Brace yourselves, Oppo. 2015 Mustang Oppo Reviews are coming. This review is only the tip of the iceberg. I can't wait to see the rest. This is also based entirely on just one test drive, and I didn't even push the car to its limits. Enjoy!
(Full disclosure: Ford wanted me to drive the Boostang so bad, they started delivering the new cars to dealers specifically in my area as well as dealers not in my area in hopes that I (and everyone else) would test drive one.)
Now about that score. I assigned this car a score of 89, but that's not based on anything specific. I just happen to like this car, so 89 it is.
So Monday afternoon, I stopped in at the local Ford dealership just to get my hands on whatever cool cars they might have in stock. But I had no idea I was going to run into this beauty parked right out front.
To the delight of the salesmen, this car had gathered a small crowd of admirers in only a few minutes. One salesman had the key fob, and remotely started the car to a fanfare of "ooo's" and "ahhh's". I was standing behind the car when the car came alive. I was immediately impressed with the depth of the exhaust note. It sounded clean too.
So now it's running. And we're all just standing around, drooling, lusting, and dreaming.
Well if no one else is going to open the door, I'll just go ahead and...
Oh Heavens, yes. Now I'm standing at the opening to the cockpit. The Captain and First Officer's seats weren't Recaro, but that didn't make them any less irresistible to me. I had to get in.
I didn't even know I was going to see this car today! And now I'm sitting in the new Boostang. Behind the wheel. With the engine running.
You know what? I should rev it. For science.
Now what? I can't just rev this thing endlessly. I won't be that guy. Plus I don't have the key fob anyway. If I touch the brake, the engine will cut. Oh man, I hope someone lets me drive this thing.
Looking around, I see excellent interior everywhere.
The rear seats are practically soft padding stuck to the back of the cabin! Sweet Baby Jesus, that is so cool.
Should've brought some syrup.
I start digging around. The center console is outstanding.
I love it when the auxiliary input is inside the console. Stowing an iPod/8-track/whatever securely is so easy!
Oh right. There's one thing I didn't mention.
Well this is awkward. But don't worry.
I kept my cool.
Next, I got a feel for rearward visibility through the mirror.
Not bad, right?
Not bad.
What happened next was completely unforeseen. The salesman opened the door, sat in the passenger seat, made a little small talk... and then popped the question!
Yes! Yes! Oh my God, I said yes.
I hand him my driver's license, and then I waited. Minutes became hours. Upon his return, we busted a Chinese fire drill and the test drive began.
His name is Alex. He put it in reverse. The car started rolling backward.
The rear view camera is pretty good, but really I was just a little saddened to see there were no cool metal toggle switches below. Damn.
We were on our way.
He pulled over. We switched seats. Now it was time for me to drive the Boostang!
Couldn't SR-20 my drive because racecar and whatnot, but it went something like this. He tells me not to push the car too hard right away. We meander down the road. I get a feel for the steering, and it's good. Was it a little numb? Could it have been a touch more communicative? Maybe. But only maybe. It's not worth nitpicking the Mustang's steering. The car is wonderful, and only a relatively small sliver of vehicles could be any better. I mean c'mon, this isn't a 458 after all.
The brakes felt good, but I couldn't push the limits. Not on public roads, and not if I don't want to get my ass kicked by Alex.
Just before the ride ended, I mashed the throttle on a 5 - 45 mph run. The car was almost exactly as fast as I expected it to be. Almost. Something was missing, but what was it again? Oh right. Put a stick shift in there, and call it a day. The automatic transmission in this car is by far the best of any I have driven. But that's like saying we listened to Paris Hilton's best song during the ride.
I pull into the dealership lot. We get out. He pops the trunk.
I was impressed! According to Alex, I could fit two whole sets of golf clubs back there. Wow. If only I played golf.
He said these cars started hitting the lot a couple weeks ago. He's already seen people buy a few of them, and at least one guy dropped a check without even looking at the car. Something about wanting the latest/greatest just because. Sheesh.
I asked for his card, and we parted ways.
I took some time to admire the Boostang one last time before I left the dealership. The red paint pops in person, but in photos it looks orange under direct light. But Christ on a bike, look at that ass.
I had to get my hands on those tail lights.
Went knuckle deep before full dragon.
That was my experience driving the Boostang. It was the first Mustang I ever drove. But now I have to live with knowing the first Mustang I ever drove was a four cylinder automatic.
Oh, and one more thing. Auto dealers, stop it with this nonsense. No one wants ads on their car.

Base car with 6 speed automatic.....say, does anyone remember why, back in the day, Toyota called there version of this car the Celica ST?
Yeah. Secretary Transport.
So here we are again.
Anyway: Boostang! Let's see, 1, 2, 3, 4...dammit! Too many letters. BOOSTNG it is, but that just doesn't convey the concept as well as I'd like.

That looks mid-90's level of dumb
I really thought Ford was going to blow it out of the water with this car. But even an IRS can't save it from the Alpha Camaro next year. It'll be more lighter, more power:weighter, more gears-er, more suspensionier, more chassis-er.
That's a lot more "er"s to deal with. God help Ford if Chevy makes the 'flow-tie' standard on all models!

I have just to see the nice toggle switches they show on the web site. Oh, and the hood is made of paper and twists and shakes under power. BUT oh that power!!!! Don't get your hopes up too high. The 94 5.0 is slow compared to modern cars. Unfortunately, it was never a beast like you would imagine. 215 hp & 285 lb-ft tq . Low HP and decent torque numbers, but not nearly as fun as you would like it to be. Its 0-60 on 6.7 seconds... A low 15 second to high 14 second quarter mile depending on how good of a driver you are, but yours is an auto so that kind of hurts the driver talent. You can still enjoy it, but looking back now it really was a let down.

Gotcha. Yeah, they can be made to be quicker, and I guess if it is free it is fun. I had some good times in one, and it will definitely be a step up from 148hp. Sucks it is not a stick, because you would definitely enjoy one of those. They have good low end power but kind of drop of at high rpm. It is kind of crazy that this new turbo 4 mustang will blow an older 5.0 gt away.

Just curious, and I am honestly not being condescending, but what car are you learning on? I have a real tight garage and no lift, which I agree sucks, but I can have the transmission out of any of my cars in less than an hr, and that includes my 300zx twin turbo. If your garage is too tight, roll the car out and do it in the driveway., the extra room will make things go a lot quicker.

You will be plenty good than. Jobs like these are intimidating until you get one or two under your belt, then you will be plenty confident. in your abilities. The worst thing you can do when working on a car is get discouraged and give up. And I think as a general rule of thumb GM likes to make sure at least 2 of the bolts are a pain to get at. I started with small jobs like these and now have done 5 or 6 full engine and transmission swaps between my driveway and my brother's. Plus it pays off in dividends to have first hand knowledge of the processes that pertain to your car, and you get to see the condition of everything else along the way to fixing what you are after. Either way, good job, and keep on learning. The pride you will feel when you build something custom will make you realize it was all worth it.

I'm sick of looking at the triple taillights like it will forever be 1968 and the world will never progress beyond it. So many of the same tired motifs in the 'new' Mustang. I guess when we wear this look out, we'll get Foxbody II for the following 15 years. Then go back to 1968

Hey I'm not sure I've read anything you're written before but I like this a lot. Punchy, funny. Will read more. Thanks for doing this.

Hey-Diddly-Ho Neighborino! I see you are also in the Greensboro area! Love the review, I wanna test drive one myself, but it would need to be a stick car....with the performance package ;-)

This head unit is a Motorolla Razer in a time of iPhones. Does it some with a magnifying glass? Or are those buttons large enough to be controlled with your elbows?

What makes you think the Camaro will be better? They couldn't make the Camaro better than the Mustang with the implementation of IRS, and years of absence. The interior of the Camaro is awful and I don't expect it to get any better. Overall don't expect it to be better because in all reality it probably won't be.

This car, its price, its engine. I love it all, until i see that it weighs 3700lbs. ugh hating that. Is it the heaviest 4cylinder RWD ever created??

That pic shows some sort of gross muffin top double bumper thing. Eww.
Otherwise that rear roofline looks stunning.

LOL.... trying to change the clutch master/slave cylinder in a Dodge Shadow, now there's an absolutely impossible task.

It's not bad looking at all, but is it a Mustang? Honestly, this should be a new Lincoln "personal luxury" car.

As you can see, the switch gear looks poor. There are also dozens of joins from one surface to another. The previous dash was simple and had a few panels, this dash is all over the place. It does not matter how good the materials are, if they appear poor. NOW I will say it has a stalk for turn signals and one for wipers, where the previous had one. This was annoying on the previous as when flashing lights you hit the wipers. So if you don't get the toggles in anything but premium, I would rather have the previous dash.
